Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico with a population of over 5 million. The metropolitan area is made up of  five municipalities which have grown together and are commonly known as Guadalajara.   The city is considered the Silicone Valley of Mexico.  It is a rapidly growing urban center with all the accompanying problems of large third world cities.

At over 5,000 feet in altitude the climate is temperate year around with abundant rains from June through October.  Many thousands of North Americans have chosen the area for retirement.  It is a 3-4 hour trip in a vehicle to the Pacific Ocean and about 5 hours drive from Mexico City.

Guadalajara is a religious city.  On October 12 each year millions of worshipers accompany the Virgin of Zapopan through the streets as she makes her way in a triumphant procession from the downtown Cathedral to her basilica.

A sect called "The Light of the World" has its origins in Guadalajara and is now the second largest church in all of Mexico. The group boasts of having 5 million adherents, mostly in Mexico and Central America.  The founder of the group claimed to have equal authority with the apostle Paul and that God used him to restore the true gospel.  However they do not preach the gospel that Paul preached.  They deny the trinity and other key doctrines. Their main church in Guadalajara has seating for 17,000 and they have smaller churches throughout the city.

Only 2% of the population profess to be evangelicals. It is a city that is generally resistant to the gospel but also a very needy urban center. However we have discovered that there are some people with a spiritual hunger.  They desire to know God's Word.  This gives us the opportunity of sharing the gospel with them.  There are opportunities as never before to evangelize and plant churches in this huge city.

Because of its size, influence and location in the least evangelized region of México, Guadalajara is a very important area to plant churches.  Not only because of the great needs in the metropolitan area itself but because of the strategic role it can play in founding other churches throughout the state of Jalisco and in neighboring states.
